

After 6.2 miles, you will arrive to Holly Lake at an elevation of 9,450 feet. and no sleeping overnight allowed many places, for example, not in the first 4+ miles of the Cascade Canyon trail, or the first 6+ miles of the Paintbrush. Climb 1.7 miles south to the end of the maintained trail on 10,680-foot Avalanche Divide. The route crests the exposed and rocky Paintbrush Divide at 10,720 feet after 7.3 miles and then declines into Cascade Canyon. This strenuous 19 mile loop takes you up Paintbrush Canyon, over Paintbrush Divide to Lake Solitude, and back out Cascade Canyon. Trail obstacles include steps, exposed roots and rocks, narrow sections, and steep switchbacks. The next day: Take a layover day and hike to two alpine lakes (it’s a 7.4-mile out-and-back). Lake Solitude is a very strenuous, 18.3 mi (29.5 km) RT out and back hike with 2,910 ft (890 m) of elevation gain with an average slope of 8. Alternatively, if you have multiple cars in your group, you can park one at each end of the trail. The trail steadily climbs the whole way up Paintbrush Canyon at 4,900 feet, but if you camp you will gain this over a two day period. Campsites in the upper reaches of South Fork Cascade Canyon.
